Travel Notes
The Center for the Humanities is in the Midtown area of Manhattan.
If you're flying into __(pick below)____, here are some tips (thanks to Matthew Cotter):
a. JFK. Located east in Brooklyn. The cab fare is a flat rate, excluding tip. Has an "AirTrain," but it does not take one into Manhattan but only to the Subway.
b. LaGuardia. Located in/near Queens. Presents traffic problems at midday, and lacks transportation options. Cabs cost roughly $45 to Midtown, but there are some shuttles (somewhat unreliable). LaGuardia offer bus options that drop one near Grand Central Terminal (for roughly ($12-15 per person). From there one can either walk (about 10 mins) or jump in a taxi ($6) to midtown. If you take the bus, however, traffic may be a problem. If you don't mind that, you can get some scenic views of the Manhattan skyline along the way. [BTW/FYI: "Grand Central Station" is a post office, not a rail terminal.]
c. Newark, NJ. They have a fantastically updated train network that brings you right into the heart of Midtown (Penn Station @ 34th Street). You would be about 5 mins. away by foot, or there is a fleet of taxis outside to deposit one at hotels. "AirTrain" costs roughly the same as the bus from LaGuardia but is far quicker. And maybe--maybe--the flight might be slightly less expensive.

There are additional options for getting into Manhattan from LaGuardia without paying too much money.
The first, and technically more complicated, is to take a taxi to the nearest subway station, Astoria Blvd. station, which is, like the airport, in Queens. The cab ride should be approximately $10-$12 and the subway fare is $2.25. The station is served by the N and W trains, both of which take you to the 34th St./Herald Square station, one block from the Graduate Center. This should get you from the airport to the school in about an hour.
The other option is to catch an MTA bus at the airport. There are stops at all terminals; just ask someone who works there where to pick up the MTA bus. The catch here is that you'll need a MTA transit card (available for purchase in the airport) or $2.25 in exact change for the bus fare. (You can ask the bus driver for a transfer slip that will allow you onto the subway at no additional charge.) There are three, two of which go directly to subway stations in Queens, and one which goes into Manhattan (and ends its route uptown, near Columbia university).
